Getting four goals from senior Paul Rudolph, the Sacred Heart Prep boys' water polo team opened defense of its West Catholic Athletic League playoff title with a 12-5 victory over visiting Mitty on Tuesday.
Despite splitting his lineup and substituting entire lineups midway through each quarter, SHP coach Brian Kreutzkamp had more than enough talent for Mitty to handle. The Gators (20-5) never played their regular lineup, but grabbed a quick 2-0 lead and led 10-4 after three quarters despite subbing liberally.
Junior goalie Ben Dearborn played less than half the match but still had seven saves while sophomore Philip Bamberg contributed three goals while five other teammates broke into the scoring column.
Sacred Heart Prep advances to the WCAL semifinals on Friday at Bellarmine Prep, where the Gators are expected to face the host Bells at 1:30 p.m. The winner of that match will advance to the championship game on Saturday, at Bellarmine, at 7 p.m.
