There's a very good reason why the Menlo-Atherton girls' water polo team has won 21 of 24 matches this season. That was evident Saturday night when the Bears handed visiting Sacred Heart Prep a 9-4 nonleague loss.
The game matched last season's Central Coast Section Division I (M-A) and Division II (SHP) teams, who are ranked 1-2 in this season's CCS Coaches Poll. The result was also similar to the two previous times the teams have met this season -- both victories by M-A.
After both teams scored in the first quarter, the Bears' clamped down defensively and grabbed a 4-1 halftime lead.
Menlo-Atherton junior Becca Dorst led the offense with five goals with junior Sarah Winters contributing in a big way with three goals. Just at important, M-A's defense held SHP senior scoring leader Yvonne Dunlevie to a single goal as the Gators fell to 18-6. M-A sophomore goalie Emily Dorst had seven saves.
