Menlo College Volleyball was on the road on Friday as they went up against The Master’s University for the first of a two-game GSAC road trip. The Oaks got their record to and even 11-11 after a 3-2 win against San Diego Christian University last Saturday and they were looking to keep the momentum rolling against the Mustangs.

Going in to the match, the Oaks had won six of their last seven games and were going for their third win in a row while the Mustang’s had received votes in the latest rankings. The teams split the first two sets but unfortunately The Master’s University got the final two sets and won the match 3-1. The loss moves Menlo’s GSAC record to 3-6 on the season and 11-12 overall.

The Master’s University was in control through most of the first set as they jumped out to and early 7-3 lead. Menlo had to grind their way to even things up as they trailed the full first half of the set. The Oaks brought it within 9-7 after going on a 4-2 run. The Master’s kept away the Oaks attack for some time as they stretched the lead to 12-7 and then 14-10. Menlo would go on a huge 8-2 run as they took the lead 18-16.

However, The Mustang’s had an 8-2 run of their own and increased the lead to 24-20. Menlo managed to get it within two but lost the first set 25-23.

The second set was a completely different story as the Oaks never lost the lead through the entire set. After starting the set on a 5-1 run, The Master’s fought back and managed to bring the score within two. With the score at 9-7 in favor of Menlo, The Oaks went on a massive 10-0 run bringing the score to 19-7. Menlo would dominate the rest of the way through the set as they won 25-12. The Oaks hit 8-22 through the set and only had three errors.

Set number three was another back and forth affair as there were eleven ties in the set. Menlo and the Mustangs traded blows as the score was within one until Menlo had the lead 10-8. After finally being able to tie things up at 14-14, the Master’s college went on a 6-2 run. Down by six Menlo was resilient and went on a 5-1 run to even things up at 21-21. The Oaks managed to tie it up two more times but the Master’s finished the set on 3-0 run to win the third 25-23.

Menlo competed well in the fourth set, jumping out to a 9-6 lead to start things early and would hold on to a three point lead until it was 16-13. This is when things went south real quick for the Oaks, The Mustangs went on 5-1 run to bring the score to 18-17. That was as close as Menlo would come to taking back the lead due to the fact that the Mustang’s finished the set on a 7-0 run to win the match 3-1.

Moea Kekauoha and Maddie Clegg both had solid performances for the Oaks as Kekauoha finished with 12 kills along with 15 digs and Clegg finished with 10 kills. Monia Hruby lead the way in assists for the Oaks as she finished with 35 of the teams 38.The lose drops the Oaks record to 11-12 while the Master’s University improved to 15-9 overall.

Menlo will have a big game Saturday as they meet No. 2 Westmont. The Oaks have never defeated Westmont, going 0-8. The last such loss came at home early this year when the Menlo lost in straight sets.
