The Menlo Oaks were playing the second game of their current two game home stand on Saturday afternoon when they welcomed Vanguard to town for a conference clash.
Menlo was coming off a dominating performance on Friday night that saw them win 3-1 against UC Santa Cruz. The Oaks wanted to continue their hot play coming into Saturday's date with Vanguard, but Menlo could not get any momentum and lost to Vanguard in straight sets.
The loss moves Menlo's record to 9-11 while Vanguard improves to 6-12.
The Oaks struggled out of the gates as they only hit .067 in the first set of play compared to Vanguard, who overpowered Menlo by hitting .545. Menlo could not gain any ground offensively as they had six errors in the first set and would fall 10-25.
Things got off to a much better start in the second as Menlo and Vanguard went back and worth. Menlo was up 9-8 early on after shoring up the passing game that they struggled with in the first set. The Lions proceeded to go on a huge 10-2 run led by six kills and an ace. Menlo would not go quietly as they went on a run of their own getting things all even at 22 apiece after kills by Ana Bechtel, Moea Kekauoha, Maggie McDonald, and Emily Sunada.
After a service error by Menlo, Vanguard had back-to-back aces to win the second set 22-25.
The third set did not start off well for the Oaks as Vanguard jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Menlo would continue to compete as they managed to get within three points of Vanguard bringing the score to 21-24, forcing Vanguard to panic and call a timeout. But that was as close as it was going to get for the Menlo as Vanguard would get a kill in the next play to win the set and the match.
Maggie McDonald had a solid performance for Menlo as she had seven kills along with 5 digs. Jade Rockwood had 28 of the 30 assists for Menlo along with 8 digs of her own. Moea Kekauoha had a decent performance as well as she had 8 kills along with 7 digs.
Menlo could not counter the Lions offensive onslaught as Vanguard had 42 kills compared to 31 by the Oaks. Vanguard also had a greater hitting percentage as they hit .323 whereas Menlo only hit .125 on the match. Although, Menlo did have more attacks with a 104-93 advantage.
The loss snapped a four game winning streak by the Oaks, the longest such streak of the season. The match against Vanguard was the sixth conference game of the season for Menlo, who is now 1-5 in conference play. Vanguard is now 3-2 in GSAC play.
Menlo will hit the road for their next game as they will go up against Arizona Christian on Thursday. The Oaks have a 2-3 lifetime record against Arizona Christian. The last match between these two schools came on November 12, of 2015, where Menlo picked up the victory 3-1.
