The Castilleja girls' tennis team upset West Bay Athletic League (Skyline Division) regular-season champ King’s Academy, 4-3, in a dramatic final-set win on Wednesday at the Cubberley Community Center courts.
After having lost to King's Academy 6-1 earlier in the season, Castilleja battled to a 3-3 tie on Oct. 23, with Caitlin Moyles and Katie McGee splitting sets with their The King’s Academy opponents Emily Barney and Ashley Farran at No. 2 doubles when darkness fell. The deciding third set was played on Wednesday with Castilleja's duo finally completing a 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 triumph.
"Caitlin and Katie played solid tennis . . . strong accurate groundstrokes with depth, outstanding volleying, strategic use of deep lobs, consistent serving, great communication, and nerves of steel!" said Castilleja coach Laurie Hunter. "Their opponents also played strong but the final set score, 6-1, was decisive."
Castilleja moves to 6-3 in the Skyline Division of WBAL, 6-7 overall. King’s Academy stand at 8-1 in Skyline, 11-4 overall. Castilleja’s final match is away, against Crystal Springs Uplands School on Thursday.
