The Menlo-Atherton girls' water polo team won their first Amanda MacDonald Invitational title ever, but had to work extra to do it in a 5-4 overtime victory over St. Francis on Saturday at Menlo College.
The Bears (19-3) won all four of their matches in the two-day tournament, playing two extra periods to beat the Lancers. St. Francis reached the tile match by upsetting defending champion Sacred Heart Prep, 6-5, in the semifinals.
Junior Becca Dorst scored the game-winning goal in the first overtime. She was first smacked in the face to draw a foul, and quickly responded by firing in a low shot into the left corner of the cage.
Both teams had numerous opportunities the remainder of the first overtime and into the second, but the defenses held together and the Bears emerged with the big victory in their first meeting with St. Francis this season.
The Lancers had the ball at the end of the second overtime period, but M-A sophomore goalie Emily Dorst came up with two solid blocks to hold off St. Francis.
"We were the top-seeded team in the tournament, so all the pressure was on us," said M-A coach Chris Rubin, who has his team ranked No. 1 in the Central Coast Section this season.
St. Francis tied the match at 3 with 6:03 left in the fourth quarter, but M-A's Heather Bogott scored with 3:41 to play to put her team on top. The Lancers got the tying goal from Hathaway Moore with 2:33 left in regulation.
