Gunn made its Homecoming all the more special by winning its first football game of 2008 with a 21-10 triumph over visiting Cupertino in SCVAL El Camino Division play on Friday night.
Gunn (1-2, 1-6) not only won, but discovered a new quarterback who helped engineer a second-half comeback. Junior Yash Patel came off the bench in the third quarter to lead a 92-yard drive for the go-ahead score.
The game looked like it would be another disappointing defeat until midway in third quarter. Leading 10-7, Cupertino was driving for a touchdown as it reached Gunn's 8-yard line. However, the Titans' defense held tough and Gunn got the ball back at its own eight to start what would be a memorable drive.
Mixing runs and passes, Patel looked in complete control as he led Gunn down the field on a drive that was capped by an eight-yard run by Jermy Chamo to put Gunn up 14-10 after a successful extra point by Tyler Ziebelman. The touchdown was Chamo's second in the game, as he scored on a one-yard run in the first quarter to give Gunn a 7-0 lead and at the time its first lead of the entire season.
Gunn got the ball back at Cupertino's 45 when John Chaplin made a great hit causing the ball to pop loose and David Marson recovered. Once again Patel led the Titans down the field where Gunn faced a pivotal fourth-and- goal from Cupertino's 9-yard line. Patel rolled right and found an open Jon Zeglin in the corner of the end zone and threw a pass in which Zeglin dragged his feet barely in the endzone for the commanding 21-10 lead with 6:47 left.
The final six minutes saw some big plays by Gunn's defense. The highlight was a bone-crunching hit by Nikko Jackson. It wasn't just Nikko Jackson on defense, other Titans came through. Interceptions by Matt Bordbari and Mo Sonuga, along with big hits by Jackson, Marson and others made this the best defensive effort of the year for Gunn.
The Titans hope to use this game as a springboard for the rest of the season.
