Leading by 17 points at halftime seemed too good to be true for the Menlo-Atherton football team. It nearly was. The Bears saw almost all of that lead disappear before holding off Terra Nova, 41-39, in a PAL Bay Division thriller Friday night at Sequoia High.
The Bears (1-0, 4-2), coming off a bye week, scored on their first five possessions but had to rely on a game-saving tackle by Will Preston and Casey Monroe to make their league opener a success.
After Terra Nova had scored on quarterback Julian Bernard's fifth TD pass with 5:37 left, the Tigers went for a two-point conversion and a possible tie. It never happened as Preston and Monroe took on the 6-foot-6, 220-pound Bernard and brought him down just shy of the goaline on the PAT run.
The Bears took over and kept the ball on the ground, rushing for three first downs while running out the clock. Bernard finished with 240 passing yards (24 of 42) and 91 yards rushing, but was stopped when it counted most. "M-A just didn't give up," Bernard said.
The Bears looked like the defending division champs that they are by taking a 34-17 lead at the half. Senior Vaughn Smith (19 rushes, 113 yards) caught a 77-yard TD pass from Turner Baty (5-of-9 passing for 126 yards, two TDs). Smith and Preston each ran for a touchdown as the Bears showed no ill effects from a 42-21 nonleague loss to Seaside two weeks ago. Senior Rod Nash led the Bears' successful running game with 135 yards on 16 carries as M-A rushed for 304 yards.
Terra Nova (0-2, 3-3) scored three straight times to open the second half, once on a safety, to make it a 34-33 game with 2:38 left in the third quarter. After the teams traded interceptions early in the final period, M-A's offense awoke with Preston providing the eventual winning points on a 15-yard scoring run with 7:07 to play. Terra Nova took just five plays to score, setting up the final defensive stop for by the Bears.
