While the match had no bearing on the final PAL Bay Division soccer standings, the Menlo-Atherton girls nonetheless came up with their most impressive victory of the season with a 2-0 triumph over league champ Woodside on Thursday in Atherton. The loss was the first this season for the Wildcats (12-1-1, 14-1-2), headed for the Central Coast Section Open Division playoffs. The second-place Bears, meanwhile, improved to 10-2-2 (12-4-2 overall) and will be playing in the CCS Division I postseason next week.

Menlo-Atherton played its best game of the season against visiting Woodside, with consistent strong work on defense, offense, and in the midfield. Defensive players Kasey Love, Ali Sivilotti, Allison Galbraith and freshman Grace Brieger plus midfield players Sarah McLeod, Molly Briggs, Alissa McNerney, Nicole Salz, and Margaret Child shut down the formerly unstoppable Woodside offense.

In the first half, McLeod sent a pass from Salz to junior Katie Guenin, who shot it in for the first goal, making it 1-0 at the half. It was the first time this season that Woodside trailed at halftime. In the second half, numerous Woodside corner kicks were thwarted by sophomore goalie Breanna Sandoval and her defensive front. M-A sophomore Josephine Cotto passed a great ball from Child to senior Talia Missan, who scored the second goal of the game.
