Varsity Girls Tennis
Menlo-Atherton 6, Mills 1
Date of competition: Wednesday, October 15, 2008
Despite losing five starters from last season's team, the Menlo-Atherton girls' tennis squad had itself a pretty good rebuilding season. The Bears on Wednesday clinched their first PAL Bay Division title since 2000 with a 6-1 triumph over visiting Mills.
Menlo-Atherton (13-0, 14-1) has one match remaining, against San Mateo, but the win over Mills gave the Bears a two-match lead over Burlingame. M-A will receive an automatic berth into the Central Coast Section playoffs.
Junior Marietta Tuionetoa once again led the way at No. 1 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Sophomore Paige Keating and senior Julia Peck rebounded from losses against Burlingame on Tuesday with impressive wins at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, as they combined to lose only five games.
Senior Anna Murveit, a co-captain with Peck, also bounced back from a loss to win her No. 4 singles match, 6-3, 6-1. In doubles, the No. 1 tandem of Jordyn Fantuzzi and Julia Sommer posted a 6-2, 6-2 win while the No. 3 duo of Taylor Wentz and Claire Uschersohn helped finish off the win with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph.
