Date of competition: Thursday, January 21, 2016
After battling to a scoreless first half, the Menlo-Atherton girls exploded for seven goals after intermission and posted a 7-0 victory over host Half Moon Bay in PAL Bay Division soccer action Thursday.
The Bears improved to 4-1-1 in league and 6-3-1 overall while remaining tied for second place with Carlmont, with Woodside still leading the division at 6-0.
M-A dominated early in the first half, with excellent passing in the midfield from juniors Nicole Salz, Alissa McNerney, and Margaret Child. But, the Bears couldn't overcome numerous offside calls to score. Strong defensive work by seniors Jaya Blanchard and Casey Love, juniors Ali Sivilotti and Allison Galbraith, and freshman Elizabeth Young kept the score at 0-0 at the half.
The Bears were on fire in the second half with four goals in rapid succession in the first 15 minutes. Sivilotti opened the storm door with a corner kick by Salz, which Sivilotti headed into the net. This was followed by a cross by junior Josephine Cotto to junior Katie Guenin for header goal No. 2. Minutes later, Salz sent the ball to Cotto, who passed to senior Talia Missan for the goal. A line drive by senior midfielder Sarah McCleod to Missan resulted in the assist to Guenin for goal No. 4.
The Bears spread the wealth with goal No. 5 following a pass from senior Julia Moreton to freshman Lauren Collinsworth, who tapped the ball into the net. Following a nice run by Child up the field, Moreton passed to McCleod, who fired in goal No. 6. The final goal of the day was by Love, who had moved to offense and dribbled the ball up the field to make the shot. Goalkeeper Breanna Sandoval had few shots to field but did so very ably.
