The Menlo-Atherton girls' tennis team clinched no worse than a tie for the PAL Bay Division regular-season title with a 4-3 victory over visiting Burlingame on Tuesday.
The Bears (12-0, 13-1) can wrap up their first league title since 2000 by beating visiting Mills on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.). That match originally was scheduled for Thursday.
Burlingame dropped its first meeting with M-A, 5-2, but was missing its No. 1 singles player plus another starter. This time, Burlingame was at full strength, but it didn't matter as the Bears swept the doubles and took No. 1 singles behind a straight-set win from junior Marietta Tuionetoa over Katya Vasilyev, 6-3, 6-4. Tuionetoa missed an entire week due to illness recently, and is just getting her health back.
The Bears actually wrapped things up at 4-0 thanks to the sweep in doubles. The No. 1 tandem of Jordyn Fantuzzi and Julia Sommer won, 6-3, 6-4; the No. 2 squad of senior Casey Burnett and Lizzy Peck won by the same score and the No. 3 duo of Taylor Wentz and Claire Uschersohn clinched the big victory with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win.
