The Palo Alto football team grabbed an early lead in the SCVAL De Anza Division race with a 34-7 division-opening win over host Los Altos on Saturday.
The Vikings (1-0, 4-1) got a big hand from Milpitas, which on Friday night upset Los Gatos, 42-35. Palo Alto visits Los Gatos in the final game of the regular season.
Against Los Altos, Paly scored on its first two possessions. The Vikings took advantage of two fumble recoveries on the Eagles' first two possessions of the game.
While Paly dominated on the ground, it got a big 75-yard scoring play from quarterback Will Brandin to Joc Pederson in the first half. Pederson actually fumbled the ball before reaching the goal line, but recovered the bouncing ball in the end zone for the score. Paly led at the half, 20-0, stopping Los Altos on back-to-back plays on the one-yard line to end the half.
