By halftime, the Sacred Heart Prep football team was well ahead of Jefferson by a score of 40-0. By the end of the game, the Gators had themselves a big victory by the score of . . . 40-0.
The Gators (2-0, 5-0) absolutely dominated the Jefferson Indians on Friday afternoon in their PAL Ocean B Division game. The second half? Why make things worse?
Sacred Heart jumped out to a quick lead, when on the first play from scrimmage, Matt Bocci took a handoff 60 yards for a touchdown. As it turned out, those seven points would be all Sacred Heart would need.
"My line did a great job of blocking for me . . . once I get past the first level, I just run hard and hope for the best," said Bocci.
After Jefferson's first possession quickly stalled, SHP quarterback Ryan Sakowski got into the end zone on a two-yard quarterback sneak.
The Sacred Heart defense again dominated the Indians' offense, forcing it into a three-and-out. Sacred Heart used many different running backs against Jefferson, mixing through a total of seven rushers. Alex Konopnicki was one of those seven, and became one of the four to rush for a touchdown when he took a handoff 35 yards for another Sacred Heart touchdown.
Sacred Heart demonstrated a dominance on offense, rushing for 138 yards, while scoring three touchdowns. And this was only the first quarter. In the second quarter, Sacred Heart mixed in the passing game with its already explosive rushing attack. Sakowski and Matt Walter hooked up for two touchdowns on passes of 71 and 16 yards.
The Sacred Heart defense continued to hold strong, keeping Jefferson off the board and holding the Indians to five first downs in the entire half. Victor Ojeda capped off the Sacred Heart scoring as he rushed 80 yards for a touchdown, bringing the lead to 40-0 by the end of the first half.
"Obviously, with the shutout, our defense played great today," said Bocci, who also plays cornerback.
Sakowski finished the game with four completions on six attempts for 107 yards and two touchdowns, all of that coming in the first half. He also had the rushing touchdown. Bocci was very efficient on the ground, using only six carries to gain 115 yards with one touchdown. He also caught one pass for five yards. Bocci did not play in the second half.
Efficiency was something seen throughout the Sacred Heart offense. Walter caught only two passes, but made the most of those passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns. The bulk of the Sacred Heart game though was on the ground, as seven rushers combined for 318 yards on just 26 carries, an average yards per carry of over 12 yards. Bocci and Ojeda combined for most of those 318 yards, as Ojeda needed only three carries to accumulate 115 yards and a touchdown.
"Running hard sets up our passing game, and once we get both going, it's really hard to defend both," said Bocci.
The Gators continue PAL Ocean B Division play next week against San Mateo, which was routed by Capuchino on Friday. SHP thumped Capuchino a week ago.
