Varsity Girls Tennis
Menlo-Atherton 5, Woodside 2
Date of competition: Thursday, October 9, 2008
The Menlo-Atherton girls’ tennis team set up a showdown for first place in the PAL Bay Division next week by toppling host Woodside, 5-2, on Thursday. The Bears (11-0, 12-1) will host once-beaten Burlingame on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., with a win by M-A virtually clinching the PAL regular-season title. Against Woodside, the Bears were missing two starters and suffered a surprising loss, but still had enough depth to defeat the Wildcats. The loss was suffered by No. 1 singles player, Marietta Tuionetoa, who came into the match undefeated in league play. She dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to East Bay transplant Blanca Martinez Cobian. Paige Keating and Julia Peck won at No. 2 and 3 singles for the Bears, who also swept in doubles behind the tandems of Jordyn Fantuzzi-Julia Sommer, Brittany Margot-Lauren Shimbo, and Lizzy Peck-Casey Burnett.
