Palo Alto 4, Los Altos 3
Date of competition: Tuesday, October 7, 2008
The Palo Alto girls' tennis team moved into a three-way tie for first place in the SCVAL De Anza Division with a closer-than-expected 4-3 victory at Los Altos on Tuesday.
Palo Alto (6-1, 13-1) earned a share of first when Saratoga (6-1) was upended by Monta Vista (6-1) in a 4-3 match Tuesday. Paly handed Monta Vista its only league loss a few weeks ago.
The Vikings played without No. 1 singles player Janet Liu on Tuesday, and that made things closer than Paly coach Andy Harader likely wanted. Emma Marti and Mira Khanna won at No. 1 and 3 singles but senior Vrinda Khanna and sophomore Emily Efland were upended in the other singles. Efland, who rarely plays singles, battled before losing, 6-2, 6-7, 12-10.
Paly wrapped up the victory behind No. 1 doubles (Gracie Dulik and Sophie Biffar) and No. 2 doubles (Lisa Ke and Margo Gerould).
