It didn't take long for the Palo Alto football team to get rolling on its way to a 43-0 victory over rival Gunn on Friday night. On only his third carry of the game, Paly junior Sam Tompkins ripped through a gaping whole and romped for 43 yards. With his next carry, Tompkins carried the ball another 33 yards through the porous Gunn defense to set up Will Brandin's 1-yard touchdown quarterback sneak. Palo Alto set the tone of the nonleague game that quick, sending the visiting Titans to their fourth straight loss. Tompkins ran for three touchdowns, sparking an offense whose momentum grew from quarter to quarter. Tompkins carried the ball 18 times for 152 yards, averaging an eye-catching 8.4 yards per carry. He also hauled in one catch for 14 yards late in the first half, converting an important fourth down that led to another touchdown. The Viking' offense accumulated 375 yards of offensive action whereas the Titans struggled against a persistent pass rush, mustering only 89 yards of total offense while suffering five turnovers and four sacks. The Vikings (3-1) have not lost a game to Gunn (0-4) since 2002, winning by an average margin of 28 points. In last year's matchup, the Vikings led by 47 at halftime before their third- stringers polished off the game. Gunn sophomore Josh Jackson was the sole spark on an otherwise moribund offense, grinding out 32 yards on seven carries, often encountering nine Vikings in the box. Junior quarterback Danny Luskin completed an equal number of passes to Paly as he did to his Gunn receivers -- in 11 passes, he completed two for 12 yards plus two interceptions. Paly used a well-balanced offense to keep Gunn guessing. The Vikings accumulated 204 rushing yards on just 35 carries. Normally a straight-ahead rushing team, the Viking offense showed myriad capabilities compiling seven plays of 20 or more yards. While Luskin struggled against a talented Viking secondary, Paly's Brandin had an easy evening, completing six of 12 passes on his way to 166 yards and two touchdown. He rushed for seven yards and one touchdown. Palo Alto plays at Los Altos next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a SCVAL De Anza Division opener. Gunn plays Monta Vista on Friday at Cupertino high in an El Camino Division game at 7:30 p.m.
