Four-time defending Central Coast Section Division II champion Sacred Heart Prep opened its water polo season with a 13-7 victory over the host Menlo-Atherton boys on Thursday evening. The Gators trailed by 4-2 after one period before warming up offensive and outscoring the Bears 8-2 over the next two periods. Alexander Nemeth took over in goal for the Gators late in the first quarter and allowed four goals over three periods while making seven saves.

Freshman Andrew Churukian and junior Jackson Enright each had three goals for SHP, which tied the match at 4 in the second period on a goal by Churukian. Sophomore Michael Sonsini gave SHP the lead at 5-4 with 2:11 left in the second period and Enright provided the winning goal when he made it 8-5 with 2:35 left in the third period. Luke Rohlen added a pair of goals for the Gators, who converted 13 of 27 shots while the Bears made seven of 33 shots. Christian Huhn led M-A with four goals. The Bears had 13 exclusions/penalties with SHP scoring on five of 12 power-play opportunities.
