The second match of the USA Volleyball Cup was much like the first of the four-match series, except the winning team was reversed as China defeated the U.S. Women’s National Team, 25-21, 25-23, 25-12, Saturday night in Honolulu.
Friday, the top-ranked U.S. Women defeated third-ranked China, 25-22, 25-15, 25-22.
However, both teams altered their lineups with China putting in star Ting Zhu, who was the Best Outside Spiker of the 2014 FIVB World Championship in which Team USA topped China 3-1 in the title match.
“First of all China played #2 (Ting Zhu) who is one of the better outside hitters in the world, and she stabilizes them a lot,” U.S. Women’s National Team Head Coach Karch Kiraly said. “They picked their serving game up tremendously, and put a lot of pressure on us with their serve. We had much less success with our serve. Lots of phases of our game got a little ragged. I would have liked to have responded with a little more grit in the third. It is no accident China is ranked No. 3 in the world and silver medalists in the World Championships.”
China dominated the service line and net with a 9-2 ace advantage and 12-5 block margin. Further, the visitors converted 48 percent of its attacks with just eight hitting errors. In contrast, the hosts converted 37 percent of their attacks with 22 hitting errors.
