FINA Intercontinental Tournament
Saturday, at Auckland, N.Z.
Semifinal
Canada 3 1 0 5 -- 9
Team USA 4 3 1 3 -- 11
Canada: Valin 4, Alogbo 2, Wright 2, Bekhazi.
Team USA: M. Fischer 3, Mathewson 3, Musselman 2, Seidemann, Clark, Gilchrist.
Notes: Stanford recruit Makenzie Fischer scored three goals, including one midway through the final period that gave the Americans a 10-6 lead. Australia closed to within 10-8 entering the final two minutes before Cardinal grad Melissa Seidemann scored with 1:34 left. Sacred Heart Prep grad KK Clark also scored for the U.S., which will play Australia in Sunday’s championship match. The Aussies beat China, 13-6, in the other semifinal. . . . “The game as a whole was chaotic,” United States coach Adam Krikorian said. “I had a hard time getting a feel for the game. Our defense in the second and third quarters was the difference. We stepped up after the first quarter. We let our guard down in the fourth and against a good team like Canada you can’t do it as they will get back into it.”
