Gilroy 31, Palo Alto 10
Date of competition: Friday, September 26, 2008
Giving up a touchdown on a kickoff return and then having a TD nullified by a penalty proved to be too much to overcome as Palo Alto dropped a 31-10 nonleague game to host Gilroy on Friday night. After Paly (2-1) had trimmed its deficit to 14-10 in the third quarter on a one-yard plunge by Sam Tompkins, the Mustangs (3-0) took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 88 yards for a 21-10 lead. The Vikings apparently rallied again when Tompkins scored, which would have made it a 21-17 game. The four-yard TD run was taken away by a Paly holding penalty. A second shot at the end zone on the same drive ended in an interception that the Mustangs returned 95 yards for a TD. Palo Alto quarterback Will Brandin suffered three interceptions, ruining an otherwise 20-for-38 effort for 214 yards. Joc Pederson caught seven balls for 107 yards. The Vikings led 3-0 on a 27-yard field goal by Will Holder with 9:01 left in the half, but trailed 14-3 at the intermission. The Vikings' running game was kept in check as Tompkins led the way with only 52 yards on 21 carries. Palo Alto plays host to Gunn next Friday (7:30 p.m.) in a nonleague game. The Titans are 0-3.
