FINA Intercontinental Tournament
Wednesday
Team USA 2 0 0 6 – 8
China 1 1 0 0 – 2
Team USA: M. Fischer 2, Gilchrist 2, O’Donnell 2, A. Fischer, Berggren.
China: Niu, Xiong.
Standings: Group A: Team USA (6 points); China (3), Kazakhstan (2), Brazil (1). Group B: Australia (6); Canada (6); Japan (0); New Zealand (0).
Notes: Stanford recruits Makenzie Fischer and Madison Berggren combined to score three goals for the Americans . . . The U.S. went nearly 20 minutes without scoring and then scored the final six goals of the contest. “It was a bit bleak for both teams in the first three quarters,” American coach Adam Krikorian said. “Both teams were exhausted with hardly any goals scored. At that point it is about digging deep and finding a way to score. It takes a lot of heart when you’re that tired.” . . . Former U.S. coach Rick Azevedo, father of former Stanford great Tony Azevedo, coaches China . . . USA star Courtney Mathewson sat out the match after suffering an accident (not water polo related) requiring stitches to the head and might miss two matches.
