In a battle between the defending CCS Division I and II champions, the Menlo-Atherton girls' water polo team played more like a championship team during an 8-4 victory over Sacred Heart Prep (4-2) in the second round of the NorCal Championships on Friday in the Gators' pool. The Bears won the Division I crown last season and returns a veteran group, which played very well together as a team on Friday. Junior Rebecca Dorst led the offense with four goals while junior Vanessa Lane added two more. As important as the offensive output, the Bears (7-1) were very solid on defense. They rotated a group of defenders on SHP scoring leader Yvonne Dunlevie, who finished with four goals. Dunlevie, however, was held scoreless while M-A built a 4-0 lead that stretched into the second quarter. She scored twice in the second quarter, but Dorst countered with a goal to end the quarter with nine seconds left and then opened the second half with another goal for a 6-2 lead. Dorst's sister, sophomore goalie Emily, was excellent in goal while helping repel numerous shots. Other M-A standouts includes seniors Morgan Leech and Hannah Breen, plus junior Anna Geiduschek. The win moved the Bears into Saturday's semifinals at 11:20 a.m. against the winner of the St. Francis-Rio Americano game. The championship is set for 5:10 p.m. in the SHP pool.
