Menlo College baseball wrapped up a four-game conference series against NAIA West leading University of British Columbia with a split on Sunday afternoon in Vancouver.

The Oaks finally found themselves on the right end of pitcher’s dual in game one when Mack Boone and Skyler Fuss combined to allow just one run on five hits in the 2-1 win.

In game two, freshman CJ Romero game Menlo a solid start but the offense couldn’t muster more than a pair of runs and fell 6-2. Menlo moves to 28-17 and 9-11 in the conference while UBC now sits at 32-11 overall and 15-5 in the conference.

All of the scoring in the first game happened in the fourth inning. The Oaks took advantage of one out singles from Nick Quejado and Alex Tenorio and a Drake Richie walk to bring up Alex Boucher. Boucher delivered a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Quejado then Chris Freeman stayed hot and singled in Tenorio to make it 2-0. The Thunderbirds scored their lone run of the game in the home half of the inning to make it 2-1 where it would stay.

Mack Boone got the start and worked 3.2 innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out one and walking one. Skyler Fuss came on and was great in relief once again, allowing no runs and just two hits in the final 5.1 innings, striking out two. Fuss earned the win for his strong effort in relief.

Nick Quejado was the lone Oak with multiple hits, tallying two of the team’s six total and its only extra base hit.

In game two, Menlo took a 1-0 lead on an Alex Boucher RBI single in the top of the first.

The Oaks stretched their lead to 2-0 in the fourth when Drake Richie came in to score on a defensive miscue.

Unfortunately, the Thunderbirds finally got to the Oaks in the sixth, taking advantage of a pair of errors to plate three unearned runs to take the lead, 3-2 at inning’s end.

In total, Romero worked six strong innings, allowing three runs on, all unearned on just two hits, striking out three and walking none. Derek Lamensdorf worked a scoreless frame in relief then gave way to Dan Grazzini for the eighth. He was touched up for three runs on three hits while striking out two and walking one.

Daniel Comstock, Alex Boucher, Gino Franco (2B) and Drake Richie accounted for Menlo’s four hits. Boucher drove in the lone run and both Richie and Boucher drew walks.

Next up for Menlo is a four-game road test against Oregon Tech before they return home to wrap up the regular season with a four-game series against College of Idaho.
