The USA Men's Senior National Team opened the FINA Men's Intercontinental Tournament with a 10-9 water polo loss to Canada on Monday in Newport Beach. Team USA battled back from a 7-3 deficit at halftime to grab a 9-7 lead in the fourth quarter only to see Canada score the three final goals of the match to earn the win. Stanford grad Tony Azevedo scored twice for Team USA, which was just 2 of 11 on power plays. Team USA returns to action on Tuesday evening at Corona del Mar High with a match against Japan. Along with Azevedo, the U.S. team includes current Stanford players Bret Bonnani, Drew Holland and Jackson Kimbell. Senior Alex Bowen, who completed his eligibility at the conclusion of 2014 season, is also on the team along with Stanford alum Janson Wigo.
