The Palo Alto girls saw their title drought continue in Central Coast Section soccer action following a 3-2 setback to top-seeded Mountain View in the Division I finals Saturday at Valley Christian High in San Jose. The No. 2-seeded Vikings wrapped up their season at 17-3-1 after hoping to win their first outright section title since 1980. The Spartans improved to 18-2-1 while beating Paly for the second time in three tries this season.

Mountain View took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals by Ysa Baluyot and Morgan Matthews as Paly's usually strong defense suffered some momentary lapses, resulting in both goals. The Vikings finally scored with under 11 minutes remaining when Jacey Pederson sent a cross to fellow junior Alison Lu, who found the back of the cage. With Paly pressing forward, Mountain View's Isabel De Armas got behind the back line and chipped a shot in over keeper Dhara Yu for a 3-1 lead with under five minutes to play.

In stoppage time, Palo Alto continued to attack and peppered the Mountain View keeper before Lu was credited with a goal following a wild scramble in front of the cage. Down 3-2, Palo Alto had one final chance to tie and had three players in the goal box with the ball loose before it was finally booted away. Moments later, time ran out on the Vikings.

Paly's downfall was the inability to finish. The Vikings had four shots sail over the crossbar in the first half and another, by Heidi Moeser, hit the bar. In the second half, Paly had at least seven good chances to score -- one from directly in front of the cage on a 1 v. 1. Again, the ball sailed over the crossbar.
