Varsity Boys Football
Valley Christian 41, Menlo-Atherton 7
Date of competition: Friday, September 19, 2008
Stepping up in class against one of the top football teams in the Central Coast Section, Menlo-Atherton showed it's not quite ready for that kind of competition as the Bears dropped a 41-7 nonleague decision to host Valley Christian on Friday night in San Jose. After two solid-looking victories to open the season, the Bears (2-1) had no answer for VC running back Cameron Williams, who carried 11 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns to lead the lopsided victory. The Warriors (3-0) scored touchdowns on all five first-half possessions in streaking to a 34-7 lead at the break. Marshall capped that splurge with a 65-yard touchdown run around left end, in which he broke three tackles and then ran away from two other defenders. M-A quarterback Turner Baty completed 15 of 32 passes for 226 yards and scored his team's lone touchdown on a one-yard run in the second quarter. M-A senior receiver Sam Knapp had eight catches for 127 yards. Rod Nash caught four passes for 49 yards, Vaughn Smith had 11 carries for 34 yards and Jason Williams gained 33 yards on four carries. Valley Christian's defense, however, limited the Bears' ground game to just 63 yards on 30 carries.
