The Menlo School boys tennis team posted two shutouts Friday to advance to the semifinals of the California Classic at Copper River Country Club in Fresno. The Knights (4-0), who opened with a 7-0 victory over St. Francis, will play Monta Vista at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the semifinal. The Knights already have beaten the Matadors, to open the season.
Against the Lancers, No. 1 Lane Leschly won 5-7, 6-0 (8-6) and Nathan Safran picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win. Freshmen Siddarth Chari won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 and Clark Safran wrapped up a 6-1, 6-3 victory. In doubles, junior Alex Neumann and Clarence Lam won at No.1 while Mark Ball and Michael Quezada teamed at No. 2 doubles. Dylan Pace and Kylee Santos took a straight-sets win at three doubles.
In a 7-0 win over Santa Barbara, senior captain Victor Pham, who is headed to play tennis at Columbia next season, triumphed at No. 1. Gunther Matta, Lane Leschly and Nate Safran won at Nos. 2-4. In doubles, Siddarth Chari and Clark Safran teamed for a win at the No. 1, spot in a super tiebreaker. Ball and Quezada won at No. 2 and Bo Leschly and David Roy were victorious at No. 3.
