The Palo Alto boys had a shot at winning the SCVAL De Anza Division title on Thursday, but came up empty-handed as host Homestead took over sole possession of first place with a 3-0 victory. The Vikings fell to 8-2-1 (25 points) while the Mustangs improved to 9-2 (27 points) with just one match remaining for both teams. Paly needs to beat visiting Los Gatos on Tuesday while Homestead loses to sixth-place Los Altos in order to claim the division championship.

Homestead played very well and put Paly on the defensive early on as the Mustangs took advantage of their larger field and found holes in the Paly defense. Homestead had a couple of chances early, including a long shot with the wind that hit the right post and deflected out. Homestead also had a penalty kick that hit the side post. The Mustangs finally scored on a long shot that curved into the right corner with just minutes remaining in the half.

Paly had the wind in the second half and began strong with a couple of chances, but failed to score. Homestead then countered and scored when a ball was not cleared out of the box. The final score came early on in the second half when a loose bouncing ball was bicycle-kicked into the upper corner.
