Varsity Girls Soccer
Menlo-Atherton 2, Aragon 0
Date of competition: Tuesday, February 10, 2015
The Menlo-Atherton girls Varsity won their third straight PAL Bay Division soccer match with a 2-0 triumph over visiting Aragon on Tuesday.
The win moves M-A to 6-3-2 in league play (9-4-3 overall) with a tough match ahead on Thursday against visiting Carlmont as the Bears fight for a spot in the postseason.
It was a tightly contested match for much of the game. It appeared that the Dons had scored first when a free kick awarded to Aragon resulted in a goal in the 8th minute, but it was called back for an offsides penalty. That proved to be the only shot the Dons would manage in the first half. The Bears had a scoring chance in the 17th minute when junior Kelsey Reed fed a ball to sophomore Katie Guenin down the right wing. Guenin was streaking toward the goal when she was taken down in the box. Guenin's subsequent penalty kick was saved by the Dons' keeper and the score remained knotted 0-0.
It wasn't until the 38th minute that junior Sarah McLeod passed a ball through to fellow junior Miranda Simes, who hammered it in to put the Bears on the board 1-0. The second half also proved a tight match. Following up on two yellow cards awarded in the first half, the second half saw two more cards issued -- a total of two each to M-A and Aragon. The Dons increased the pressure on the Bears and fired off two shots toward the end of the match. But, it was M-A that again scored in the waning minutes of the half when Reed sent a ball to freshman Josephine Cotto in the middle of the field. Cotto found Guenin, who used her speed to get through and beat the keeper 1 v 1 to put the ball in the back of the net and give the Bears a hard fought victory. The Bears outshot the Dons 16-3 on the afternoon.
