Palo Alto pinned down its first victory of the SCVAL De Anza Division wrestling season with a 40-36 triumph over host Gunn on Thursday night. It was the Vikings’ first win over their rival in three years. Paly, with one starter out, improved to 1-3 in league (1-4 overall) while the Titans, with six starters sidelined, fell to 1-4 and 4-4. Palo Alto picked up the win despite forfeiting three matches. Paly’s Emil Wolfgramm registered a 21-6 technical fall over Gunn backup Inaki Gomez at 160 pounds to clinch the victory.

“We had some sickness and injury,” said Gunn head coach Chris Horpel. “We also had some skin conditions, which took out one of our starters in a critical matchup. “In the end, first-year wrestler Inaki Gomez had to come up with a win at 160 pounds, but his inexperience was just too much to overcome.”

Alexa Austin, one of two girls wrestling for Paly, pinned Matt Golub at 2:39 to win at 113 pounds. Paly’s Seth Goyal, who is ranked No. 2 in his weight class in the Central Coast Section, improved to 18-3 by pinning David Abramovitch in 1:43. Gunn’s Ian Cramer improved to 22-1 with 19 pins by pinning Ian Garduno at 4:38 to win at 152 pins. Cramer, who is ranked No. 1 in CCS and sixth in the state at 138 pounds, wrestled up two weight classes.
