The Palo Alto boys remained atop the SCVAL De Anza Division soccer standings with a 3-0 victory over visiting Santa Clara on Thursday. Paly (3-0, 7-1-2) and Santa Clara fought tough during the first half with Paly having several near scores, including a post shot and a deflection off the keeper that just slid past the post. The Vikings also survived a cross that was deflected away by Declan Cassini. Paly got the eventual winning goal in the 19th minute when junior Dami Bolarinwa scored off an assist from sophomore Michel Siaba. The last 20 minutes of the half were evenly played, although Santa Clara only had one shot on goal and there were no saves.
Paly started attacking quickly in the second half and the payoff came when Wesly Woo put a through ball to the top of the box that Cole Tierney slammed into the corner. Santa Clara tried to counter-attack with quick through balls, but Paly countered on its own when Tierney took a pass down the right flank and put a perfect cross to the waiting Ariya Momoney, who put a nice header into the upper corner for a 3-0 lead. Paly junior keepers Alex Bomoni and Eli Friedlander combined for the shutout. Palo Alto will face a tough week with Mountain View on Tuesday followed by Homestead (Thursday) and Los Gatos on Saturday.
