The banner hanging on the fence said it all -- "Pinewood Football, Undefeated for 50 years." It was true before and after the Panthers made their debut in the sport with a big 34-12 win over Marina (Monterey) on Friday in Los Altos Hills. Pinewood the first football game in the 50-year history of the school, opening the new eight-man Coast Athletic League with a resounding effort to help continue to celebrate the school's 50th anniversary year. Senior Connor Whitlock ran for three touchdowns and caught a pass from quarterback Max Lippe for a fourth score to help highlight the day. Pinewood also came up with a solid defensive effort, led by linemen Michael Darrow, Andrew Kruep and Casey Morgan to shut down the Mariners. Marina, located just north of Monterey, took a 12-0 lead before Pinewood rallied and tied the game at halftime. The Panthers used four wide receivers in their offensive set, with two on the line and two right behind them -- something out of the Arena Football League. It worked, however, for Pinewood coach Mike Tirabassi and his squad, which numbered just 16 at game time. Whitlock's 29-yard scoring reception from Lippe made it a 12-6 game in the second quarter. Moments later it was 12-12 after Whitlock ran 21 yards for the tying score just before halftime. Whitlock and Lippe shared quarterback duties, with Lippe throwing for 70 yards on six completions. Pinewood took the lead for good when Matthew Dawes ran 39 yards for a 20-12 advantage. Darrow also came up wit a safety for a 22-12 margin. Whitlock finished things off with a scoring run late in the third quarter and a 55-yarder following an interception by Jonas Fernbach.
