Menlo-Atherton's offense and defense put on another show, resulting in a 24-7 nonleague victory over host Independence on Friday night in San Jose. Like in last week's 30-0 season-opening win over Saratoga, the Bears (2-0) came up with the big plays at the right time against Independence. Rod Nash was one of the big playmakers as he caught four passes, turning a short slant pattern into a 74-yard touchdown from quarterback Turner Baty. That gave M-A a 17-0 lead late in the second quarter. Head coach Bob Sykes liked the improvement he saw, especially in the passing department, where Baty completed 11 of 17 passes for a career-high 235 yards. Baty completed only three passes against Saratoga. Senior running back Vaughn Smith added to the Bears' offense, leading the running attack with two touchdowns and 105 yards on 14 carries.
