The Menlo-Atherton boys opened their 2014-15 soccer season with a 3-0 nonleague victory over visiting Menlo School on Wednesday night. No scoring was provided for the Bears. An injured Knights team (0-2-1 overall), missing a few key starters, started the game poorly and was quickly behind. After some good combination play in midfield, the Bears found a streaking forward in the box. He took his defender with him and laid the ball off cleverly for his teammate, who calmly slotted home to put his team on top. A few minutes later, Menlo found itself down 2-0 after a defensive breakdown. The Bears kept pressuring the Knights deep in their half and ultimately found a third goal shortly before halftime. Menlo fought back in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net. Junior forward Tyler McGraw had a standout performance for the Knights in the losing effort.
