Who says the first game of the season is supposed to be a tune-up game? Instead, Menlo School got an intense battle with Hamilton City and plenty of opportunity to work on its two-minute drill. Menlo went on the road to knock off Hamilton City on Friday night 21-17, winning the game on a late touchdown run from Jerry Rice Jr. Though 38 points were scored in total from the game, 21 of those 38 came in the last six minutes. The sudden outburst of offense began when Menlo drove the length of the field and Ryan O'Holleran rushed into end zone, giving Menlo a 14-10 lead with six minutes to go. However, Hamilton City did not even need all six minutes and scored on a long touchdown pass to retake the lead 17-14 with only three minutes left. But again, the Knights would not go away. Faced with a fourth-and-five from the Hamilton City 35-yard line, Rice Jr. received a pitch, and raced to the end zone, breaking several tackles on the way there. Despite the strong finish, Menlo got off to a "slow start," said quarterback Danny Diekroeger, and trailed 10-0 early. A drive at the end of the first half that, according to Diekroeger, was "two minute drill, no huddles all the way," brought Menlo within three at halftime. O'Holleran put those first points on the board for Menlo with a touchdown run. It was not until late in the fourth quarter that the offense would find the end zone again. Menlo returns to action next Saturday night against East Nicholas at Woodside High School.
