Caitlin Lowe's RBI single in the top of the ninth inning broke a scoreless tie and helped send the United States softball team to the Olympic gold medal game. Team USA beat Japan, 4-1, on Tuesday night (Wednesday morning in Beijing) in the semifinals. Crystal Bustos gave the Americans some insurance with a towering three-run homer. Stanford grad Jessica Mendoza worked a way just ahead of Bustos. Monica Abbott threw eight shutout innings for the win and Cat Osterman ended the proceedings in the bottom of the ninth.
