The United States, which have never won the World Championship, defeated two-time defending World Champions Russia, 25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23, on Thursday for the second time at this World Championship. The Americans won the first meeting 3-1 to cap Pool C in the first round.
Team USA, now 9-2 overall in the tournament, was led by Kimberly Hill’s 18 points, while Kelly Murphy and Stanford grad Foluke Akinradewo added 15 and 13 points respectively.
“Russia is a great team and I respect their great history,” USA coach Karch Kiraly said. “I am proud of what my team was able to produce tonight, recovering from the disappointing loss against Italy.”
Team USA converted 41.8 percent of their attacks into points with a .242 hitting efficiency. Russia was better even in defeat at 44.4 percent on attacks with a .323 hitting efficiency. However, USA won the transition game with a 75-59 dig advantage.
Russia’s chances of finishing in the top four for the 14th time now hinges on defeating Italy 3-0 or 3-1 on Friday.
If the USA advances to the semifinals, it will be for the second consecutive World Championship.
USA and Russia have now met 11 times at the World Championship with the Europeans leading the head-to-head series 6-5.
USA broke the 250 sets won mark during the match and have won 252 in World Championship history. The U.S. also became the third nation to have at least 200 set losses at the World Championship.
