Tallahassee 17, Palo Alto 4
Date of competition: Sunday, August 17, 2008
The Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-star team picked a bad time to play its worst defense of the postseason. Palo Alto committed an uncharacteristic five errors during its 17-4 loss to Tallahassee (Fla.) in the opening round of the Babe Ruth 14-year-old World Series on Sunday in Quincy, Mass. During its four-game sweep of the Pacific Southwest Regional in Palo Alto, the PA 14s committed just two errors the entire tournament. Tallahassee jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, but Palo Alto countered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Palo Alto tied the game in the second, but Tallahassee scored four times in the third and nine times in the fourth to easily pull away. Palo Alto next plays on Monday at 11:30 a.m (PST) against the Midwest Plains regional winner. Palo Alto is assured of four pool-play games, but needs to win at least two to reach the single-elimination playoff field starting Aug. 21.
