Menlo 2, Marymount 1
Date of competition: Saturday, October 4, 2014
Menlo College Women's Soccer team returned to action at home on Saturday afternoon looking to rebound after a tough conference loss to Soka on Friday and seeking revenge from a 3-1 loss to Marymount last Friday.
Thanks to a methodical offensive attack and a stingy defensive effort, it was mission accomplished on both fronts.
It was relatively quiet offensively for both teams as the two totaled just 17 total shots in the match, only 11 of which were on frame.
Menlo was actually outshot 11-6 but made their four shots on goal count, netting two goals. The first goal was the team-best seventh of the season and second in as many matches for junior Brittany Squarcia.
Squarcia received a cross from Marianna Burns, stepped back and fired off a great shot far-post to break the tie in the 34th minute.
The Oaks' defense held strong for the remainder of the half and took a 1-0 advantage into the half.
Scoring was at a minimum again in the second half, but the Oaks got what would prove to be a critical goal to make it 2-0 in the 73rd minute of play.
Freshman Danielle Robinson got the pass from Victoria Piazza and drove home her first career goal for what was the game winner in Saturday's conference rematch. The assist was the second of the season for team captain Victoria Piazza.
The reason the goal proved so critical became evident when Marymount was finally able to crack the scoring column in the 78th minute with an unassisted goal from Riley Brieno. Despite cutting the lead in half, the goal was all the Mariners could muster as they fell 2-1.
It was a big win for Menlo who now sits tied atop the conference with Marymount. Menlo is 8-4 overall and 3-2 in Cal Pac play while Marymount is 6-5 and 3-1 within the conference.
Next up for the Oaks is the final match of a three-match home stand that pits the Oaks against the Simpson University Red Hawks on Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 12:30 p.m.
