The first match of a two-match southern California conference road trip ended with the Oaks on the wrong end of a 3-1 score against the Marymount Mariners.

The Oaks managed to head into the break leading 1-0, but a trio of second half goals was too much for the Oaks to overcome, as they dropped their first Cal Pac match of the 2014 season.

It was a physical match from the onset, according to Menlo coach Keith Lambert, and the Oaks were up to the task for the first 45 minutes.

“We came out and started well. It was probably the most physical team we’ve played all year and we did a good job of matching their physicality in the first half.”

The solid first half of play came to fruition in the 26th minute when sophomore Jelissa Blanco scored her first career goal from 22 ft. out to give the Oaks a 1-0 lead.

The goal was set up by a Menlo free kick which they sent into the box and, following the rebound, Blanco found an opening and sent it passed the Marymount keeper.

Despite the goal and a great first half effort, Marymount came out swinging in the second stanza and quickly tied things up in the 57th minute. Less than a minute later, Marymount struck again.

“They come out very tenacious in the second half and continued to win the 50-50 battle and keep pressure on us,” Lambert said. “As a group it wasn’t our best day in terms of responding. I’m proud of the girls’ effort, but it wasn’t our sharpest day in terms of winning 50-50 balls and connecting passes.”

Menlo had opportunities in the second half, including a late breakaway by Danielle Robinson with five minute remaining. Robinson fired off a shot on goal which deflected off the keeper and gave Danielle McCarthy a chance at the goal, but some heady defending from the Mariners kept it out of the net to maintain the 3-1 score.

The Oaks look forward to another conference test on Sunday against Soka University to conclude the road trip.

Menlo and both Soka and Marymount will meet again next week as Soka comes to Atherton for a Friday afternoon match and Marymount travels to Wunderlich Field next Saturday.
