Palo Alto 8, San Benito 3
Date of competition: Saturday, August 2, 2008
The Palo Alto 14-year-old Babe Ruth all-stars defeated San Benito, 8-3, in the second round of the Pacific Southwest Regional at Baylands Athletic Center on Saturday, thanks in part to the hitting of BJ Boyd and the pitching of Tucker Jorgenson. Boyd led the Palo Alto offense with two hits and three RBI, a stolen base, and an inside-the-park home run. Boyd and the rest of Palo Alto's offense provided plenty of support for Jorgenson, who threw a complete-game eight-hitter with just three walks. Jorgenson's curveball fooled San Benito hitters throughout the night and helped him accumulate six strikeouts. Palo Alto will play Antioch on Monday night (7:30 p.m.), with the winner advancing to Wednesday's championship game at 4 p.m. The regional champion will advance to the World Series in Quincy, Mass. No Palo Alto Babe Ruth team has ever reached the World Series in the 50-year existence of the program.
