The Palo Alto Babe Ruth 14-year-old all-stars opened their quest for a trip to the World Series with a 10-3 victory over Torrance in the opening round of the Pacific Southwest Regional on Thursday night at Baylands Athletic Center. West Reno defeated Carbon (Utah) in the other opener, 7-3. Both Palo Alto and West Reno advance to play in the winners' bracket on Saturday. Palo Alto got a strong six innings out of starter Freddy Avis, who allowed just three hits while striking out five. BJ Boyd, Sam Falkenhagen, Travis McHugh and Jake Batchelder all had two hits for Palo Alto with McHugh driving in a pair. Boyd tripled to deep right field to highlight a five-run sixth inning. He scored three times and Falkenhagen stole three bases. Palo Alto will play the Guam-San Benito winner on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to Monday's semifinals at 7:30 p.m.
