Team USA 2, Germany 0
Date of competition: Thursday, July 31, 2014
The top-seeded women’s beach volleyball team of Stanford grad Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross continued their winning ways on Thursday at the FIVB A1 Klagenfurt Grand Slam.
The pair downed Germany’s No. 16-seeded team of Laura Ludwig and Julia Sude, 21-16, 21-16, in their only match of the day. The U.S. tandem will take on another German squad in the second round of single elimination on Friday, with the match against No. 8-seeded Karla Borger and Britta Buthe.
"This is a great win for us, the slight rain didn’t bother us at all," Walsh Jennings said in a FIVB interview. "We have a very good rhythm and we didn’t make many mistakes so we were able to keep the Germans from making a strong run at us this time. Last week in Long Beach, on our home sand, they almost beat us, but we got by 17-15 in the tiebreaker set."
