The U.S. women's Olympic water polo team lived up to its top seed for the Beijing Games with a 7-5 victory over Australia in an exhibition match at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center on Thursday night. The victory gave the U.S. a 3-1 edge in the recent exhibition tour. Thursday's final showdown attracted an announced sellout crowd of 2,969 -- the largest audience ever to view a women's water polo match on U.S. soil. Stanford graduate Brenda Villa, the Olympic team captain, led the victory with three goals. Recent Cardinal grad Alison Gregorka added a goal and current Stanford player Jessica Steffens contributed plenty of defense for the winners. "It's a win," Villa said. "It wasn't pretty . . . The defenses cracked down and there were less goals."
