The Menlo School boys opened defense of their Central Coast Section Team Tournament title with a 7-0 victory over visiting St. Francis on Friday. The top-seeded Knights (18-3), who are seeking a sixth straight CCS title, played without starting singles players Victor Pham and Lane Leschly and still had no trouble dispatching the Lancers (13-11) as only sophomore Nathan Safran went to a third set -- winning No. 4 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2. Safran normally plays No. 1 doubles for Menlo. Senior David Ball, junior Vikram Chari and junior Gunther Matta swept the top three singles in straight sets. Next up for Menlo is No. 8 seed Palo Alto (14-6) on Monday in Atherton at 3 p.m. The Vikings eliminated Mitty, 5-2.
