The third-seeded Menlo-Atherton boys opened the Central Coast Section Team Tournament in tennis with a 6-1 romp over visiting previously unbeaten Homestead in the second round on Friday. Homestead (17-1) was coming off a 7-0 thrashing of Pioneer in the first round. The Bears (18-4), given a first-round bye, made the most of a homecourt advantage by quickly jumping to a 3-0 lead. In order of finishing, Casey Morris at No. 4 singles, Drew Mathews and Danny LaPorte at No. 2 doubles, and Saul Menjivar and Axel Brenner at No. 1 doubles all won with 6-1, 6-1 scores.

Homestead would not go quietly and made the Bears wait anxiously for about 20 minutes before the match was clinched by Reed Fratt at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Scott Morris at No. 1 singles then finished off his match, 6-0, 6-4. At No. 3 doubles, M-A's Alex Iyer and Zach Novak came from behind to win 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (6). At No. 3 singles, Nick Fratt lost a tight match, 6-7 (5), 6-4, 1-0 (5) for Homestead's only point. The victory puts M-A into the CCS quarterfinals on Monday at home (3 p.m.) against No. 6 Serra (14-5), a 5-2 victor over St Ignatius. The Padres reached the CCS finals last season, losing to Menlo School.
