The Menlo College baseball team scored five runs in the eighth to tie the game, but Elliot North's two-out RBI single in the ninth put Concordia back on top for good, keeping them alive in the NAIA West Tournament with a 7-6 win at Thunderbird Park on Saturday.

Ryan McGonigle hit a one-out double to right field to set up the opportunity for Concordia in the ninth. Menlo reliever Eric Davila struck out the next batter for the second out in the inning, but North drove in the go-ahead run with a single through the left side of the infield.

Looking at a 6-1 deficit in the eighth, the Oaks put two men on to lead off the inning, and Daniel Comstock hit a two-run double to make it a 6-3 contest.

Yearout then picked up a couple outs and appeared to get himself out of danger by inducing a groundball to shortstop for the third, but a throwing error allowed a run to score and the inning to continue, leading to two more runs on singles from Chris Freeman and James Threw.

For the Oaks, Derek Rodrigues went 5 1/3 innings and allowed six runs, three earned, on two walks and nine hits. Davila went 3 2/3 innings and allowed a run on three hits and a walk.

For Menlo, Nick Quejado led the way offensively, going 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Comstock was 1-for-5 with a double, marking his career best 24th double of the season, making him the all-time single season doubles leader in Menlo College Baseball history. Comstock overtakes 2013 All-American Jimmy Bosco who notched 23 doubles in 2013.

The second loss of the tournament means a knockout for Menlo, while Concordia advances to play the Corban Warriors on Sunday at noon.

The loss concludes Menlo’s 2014 season one win shy of the 30-win plateau which would have marked the fourth-straight year the program notched 30 or more wins. The Oaks do, however, finish the season with a winning record for the fifth consecutive year; one of only two teams in the Menlo Athletic Department to achieve this impressive feat.
