Menlo (8-12, 1-3) dropped its first conference series of the 2014 campaign when they fell twice to Concordia (12-5, 3-1) in day two of the two-day, four-game weekend set. A seven-run first inning in game one set the tone for the day and, despite a resilient effort from the Oaks, they ultimately fell 7-5 in game one and 6-2 in game two to fall to 1-3 on the weekend.
Game one: Concordia 7 Menlo 5
The Cavliers scored all seven of their runs in the top of the first inning of game one, taking advantage of two errors, three walks and a grand slam from Cole Pittman. Alex Tenorio got the start and was unable to make it out of the first before giving way to Eric Davila who was phenomenal in relief. The right hander tossed 8.2 scoreless innings allowing just five hits while striking out seven and walking one.
Menlo battled back in the top bottom of the first, putting a pair of runs on the board after Ryan Coonan singled and Daniel Comstock hit his first of two homers on the day to make it 7-2. The Oaks tallied two more in the second on an RBI bunt from Coonan to score John Bowling and an RBI single from Alex Boucher to score Matt McHenry. One more run would come in the bottom of the fourth, but that was all Menlo could muster in the loss.
Jon Yearout earned the win for his eight innings of work in which he scattered 12 hits, striking out four and walking 1. Blake Evetts picked up his fourth save of the year for a scoreless ninth.
Game two: Concordia 6 Menlo 2
The big inning bug bit Menlo once again in game two. A 2-1 game for much of the day, Concordia tallied three runs on three hits off the Menlo bullpen in the top of the seventh to make it 5-1.
"If you look at the statistics of baseball they classify a big inning as three runs or more and your chances of winning when that happens are dramatically low," said McKinley. "We talk to the guys about just getting back to our philosophy - we try to limit the number of bases we give to the opposing offense and we really didn't do a good job of that today. We're going to come back on Monday and continue to get better and look to play our best baseball as the season progresses."
Daniel Comstock homered for the second time of the day in the seventh to make it 6-2 where it would remain. Menlo's only other run of the day came on an Alex Boucher no-doubt shot over the left-center field wall in the fourth.
Kyer Vega, making his first start of the year, took the loss. Vega worked himself out of numerous jams allowing just two runs on three hits while striking out five and walking six. Austin Hadley earned the complete game win for Concordia allowing just six hits and striking out eight.
The Oaks return to conference play next weekend with a trip to Salem, Ore. to take on Corban for a four game set.
