Palo Alto remained winless for the seventh straight match, but salvaged a 2-2 deadlock with host Santa Clara in a SCVAL De Anza Division boys' soccer match on Friday. The Vikings (1-3-4, 5-6-5), who recorded their fourth tie in the past seven matches, started the scoring when a nice through pass from Cina Vazir was taken by Fernando Rodriguez and put in the lower left corner. Paly came on strong with a second goal when Jack Stoksik took a Roberto Sotelo pass under high pressure and put a deflection past the Santa Clara keeper.
The second half was controlled by Paly. However, Santa Clara put Palo Alto under pressure several times and gained five corner kicks in the last 10 minutes. The Bruins scored on the third corner when a Paly defender failed to clear a ball and the Santa Clara forward took a shot from the PK mark and placed it into the right corner. Play went back and forth, but Paly gave Santa Clara another corner with three minutes left. Santa Clara sent a high corner to the back post where an unmarked Santa Clara player took a cross and put it into the upper corner to tie the game. The Vikings had a chance to move right behind third-place Santa Clara with a win. The tie earns only one point and makes it difficult to catch Santa Clara and Los Altos in the standings. They trail Los Gatos, which remains undefeated.
